Recognizing both need and the aspiration to professionalize teacher education, a group of committed educators launched the Council for Teacher Education National Chapter in 1985 under the guidance of Late Dr. Gulab Chaurasia the Founder of CTE. This organization was registered as a Professional National Organization of Teacher Educators under registration No. 508/91 on August 24th 1991 Under M. P. Societies Registration Act 1973. Presently Dr. Devraj Vij is the National President of the Council.

The major objective of CTE is to strengthen teacher preparation programmes, both pre-service and in-service. Since the key to achieving this goal lies in enhancing the competence and commitment of teacher educators, most initiatives have been focused on the professional development of teacher educators.

CTE has a membership of over 7000 individuals and institutions throughout the country. Presently there are lot of innovative work carried out by the active office bearer of the council like launching of Website. The council is also looking forward for more International collaboration with various agencies.

CTE has also started “CTE Bureau of International Relation”, under this head CTE has initiated a dialogue with such international organizations as The American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), World Council for Curriculum and instruction (WCCI).

Along with this CTE seeks opportunities to work closely with NCTE, NCERT, NUEPA, UGC, DIETs and other agencies at the national and state levels in implementing the national agenda for education. At present “The CTE journal”, is published twice a year during Jan-June and July- Dec, under the guidance of prominent educationists. This journal is with ISSN number and it is peer reviewed and referred journal. Along with this there is continuous work carried out all round the year. CTE has published first book in 1998, entitled “The Teacher, Teacher Education and Professional Organizations of Teachers’”. The second book was published in 2006, “Teacher Education for 21st Century”.

In order to decentralize the work and carry out smooth functioning of the council there are around 20 different state centres of CTE. The state centres of CTE are engaged in preparation and publication of instructional materials in regional languages for the use of students and staff members of DIETs.

CTE experts committee is developing a comprehensive plan for helping DIETs in their professional tasks. Presently, CTE is fully functioning in 20 different states of India, and from 2011 new chapter in Mizoram was also associated with the council. Even CTE international chapter will be launched at Kathmandu (Nepal) within short time span. Every year CTE is also arranging Annual Conference at different places.
